Knitted Fairy Lights Wall Hanging

When I saw these knitting fairy lights on Instagram, I thought they were so neat and knew I wanted to make them for my workspace! Since there wasn’t a tutorial for it, I made one!

Materials:

Step 1:

Put the batteries into your copper wire fairy lights so you can see them twinkle while you knit them!

Step 2:

Using the backwards loop cast on method (most often used for casting on stitches on sweaters for the arm holes), cast on 23 stitches.

Here’s a good video tutorial for this cast on method if you aren’t familiar with it or need a refresher.

Step 3:

Purl your first row across.

This is your wrong side. You can place a marker to indicate your wrong side or you can tell you’re on the wrong side when your working yarn and your end yarn (the end you casted on with) are on opposite sides.

Wrong Side

Step 4:

Repeat this pattern:

Knit 1 row (right side)

Purl 1 row (wrong side)

This will make a stockinette stitch for your wall hanging. Straighten out your stitches after every row to keep things straight.

Right Side

Step 5:

Repeat step 4 until you have approximately 12″ of lights left.

Step 6:

Knit 12 stitches and leave your knitting in the middle.

Step 7:

I didn’t have the correct size knitting needles for the knitting – so I slipped out my stitches from my size 11 needles and transferred the stitches to my US Size 10.5 or 6.5 mm needles to hang on the wall.

Step 8:

Place a tack or pushpin into the wall where you want the center of your wall hanging to be – this should be right under the needles.

Hang the string lights on the pushpin and let it hang.

I also attached the battery pack to the wall and then seccured the wall hanging flush against the wall by adding two more pushpins in each bottom corner.

Weave in your ends so it’s a clean look.

Step 9:

Turn the lights on and admire! Mine comes with a nifty little remote so I can easily turn them on and off and change how they twinkle – although – I like the simplicity of the straight lights.
