Step 1:

Cast on 40 stitches to your circular knitting needles. I like to use the long tail cast on method, but you can choose whichever method works best for you.

Step 2:

Join in the round. Knit 1, Purl 1 all the way around for 7 rows total. You can either place a stitch marker at the beginning of your round, or just use the tail as your marker. This is your brim.

Step 3:

Knit in the round for about 20 rows (rounds). Because it’s in the round, you will end up getting a stockinette stitch pattern, even though you’re just straight knitting!

You can try it on for size to make sure it fits before you start your decreases.

Step 4:

To start decreasing:

Knit 3, Knit 2 together (K2tog) all the way around until you’re at the beginning again.

Knit the next round.

Knit 2, Knit 2 together (K2tog) on the next round. (23 stitches remain)

Knit 2 together all the way around. (12 stitches remain)

Step 5:

You should have 12 stitches left on your cable. Cut your working yarn with about 10” or so of extra yarn. Thread your yarn needle with the cut yarn and feed the needle through each loop still on the cable and move it off.

Step 6:

Once you have all the stitches on your yarn instead of the cable, pull the stitches tight to close up the top of the hat.

Step 7:

Turn the hat inside out and tie a knot with the excess yarn. Weave in ends around the top and trim any remaining yarn.

Turn hat right side out again.

Step 8:

Add your pom pom! Choose one of your pom poms to add to the hat. I’m selling a great little 6 pack in my Etsy shop for all of your crafting needs!

Cut a another 10” of yarn from your skein and thread it through the yarn needle. Thread the yarn from the center of the yarn on the inside of the hat. Attach the pom pom by the elastic loop. Then, thread the yarn back through the top of the hat to the inside. Pull tight and tie several knots to secure tightly on the inside of the hat.
