Materials:
- Scrap Fabric
- Rotary Mat
- Rotary Cutter
- Straight Edge
- Sewing Machine
- Scissors
Step 1:
Pick out some scrap fabric and iron it so it’ll be flat before you start cutting.
Step 2:
Cut two large pieces that measure 13.5″ by 14″ folded in half or 27” by 28” not folded in half. You can cut two different types of fabric for the reversible look!
I decided to leave the tote body fabric folded in half for sewing so there was less sewing, but you can cut them into 4 individual pieces if you’d prefer.
Step 3:
Cut two long strips of fabric that measure 18″ by 3″ folded in half or 36” by 3” not folded in half.
Step 4:
Place your tote body fabric right sides together and sew up the two edges (if you left it folded) with a 5/8″ seam or the three edges in a U shape leaving the entire top open.
Repeat for the other piece of fabric.
Step 5:
Fold over a small edge on the top of your tote body fabric and sew all the way around without sewing it completely together.
Repeat on the other tote body fabric.
Step 6:
Place your fabric for your strap right sides together just like you did for the tote body and sew up the two long edges using a 5/8″ seam leaving the short edges open on each side.
Step 7:
Place a safety pin on one short end of your strap fabric. Feed the safety pin through the fabric by bunching it up and the pulling it straight until you reach the other side and your fabric is completely right side out. Remove the safety pin.
Step 8:
Turn one of your tote body fabric pieces right side out while leaving the second one inside out. Put the inside out piece inside the right side out piece.
Step 9:
Place your strap along the seam of your tote bag in between the two layers of your tote body fabric. Insert the strap about an inch or so below the top of the bag so the strap would be secured inside.
Step 10:
Triple sew the strap in place between the layers of your tote body fabric by using your reverse sewing function on your machine.
Continue to sew around until you reach the other side for the second side of the strap.
Make sure that your strap isn’t twisted and triple sew the strap in place on the other side. Continue to sew around until you’re back at the beginning.
Step 11:
Trim up and threads or fabric to finish the look! You now have a cute little tote bag that you can enjoy on either side!
