LYS Day 2021 Shawl: Review and Reveal

I had the absolute pleasure of doing my first test knit for Jill @KnitSisu! I’m so excited for how this shawl turned out for the spring!

The Pattern:

This is the Local Yarn Store (LYS) Day 2021 Shawl by Knit Sisu! This is my first time working with Jill and my first time doing a test knit! My friend Ashlee sent me the post in an instagram message because we had talked about me needing to find a pattern for the yarn I received (which I’ll talk about later).

This looked like a fun shawl design that had stitches I was unfamiliar with! The shawl is a boomerang shape – which is also something I’ve never done before. It creates a really neat “wing” look to the shawl with the longest part making up the other half of the shawl.

There are some stitches I was unfamiliar with – like some eyelets, broken ribbing (I’ve done ribbing before though), and some 3RT stitches that create these little fire-fly like stitches, as Jill put it. Jill is very talented at explaining how to do the stitches in the pattern though – in case you haven’t done them before like me.

I would recommend putting in a lifeline before starting each section of the shawl just in case you make a mistake. Lifelines make it super easy to rip back if you need to – like before starting the 3RT section.

The pattern calls for a 40″ circular cable, but you could do it with a smaller sized cable if you don’t mind your stitches being a little more bunched up before you knit. I was already using my longest cable on another project – so I used my 22″ cable from my ChiaoGoo Red Lace Interchangeable set and it was completely fine!

I also really liked being able to use to Apple Watch to keep track of how many repeats I had left to do in each section! I highly recommend using the Row Counter app if you have an Apple Watch or plan on getting one!

Overall, the pattern was super fun and exciting! It definitely kept my interest and the different color sections and combinations kept it very interesting! I think this is the perfect little spring shawl for those in between days and evenings when the weather can’t quite make up its mind!

The Yarn:

I purchased the yarn as a “Mystery Skeins Sale” from Amanda of Mandi’s Makings. This was my first experience working with her yarn and it was enjoyable! I loved the element of surprise opening the package and not knowing what colors would emerge!

Amanda picked the most lovely and wonderful of colors for me – it honestly felt like she knew me and picked my favorites!

They are all in her DK Weight yarn which is 230 yards/100 grams and they’re 100% Superwash Merino Wool!

The colors I used are:

Main Color (MC): Green Subway Tile

Contrast Color #1 (CC#1): Carribean Way

Contrast Color #2 (CC#2): Rose

After finishing the pattern, I had approximately 6.67 grams left of the Green Subway Tile, 33.79 grams left of the Carribean Way, and 28.58 grams left of the Rose colorway.

I loved how the colors played together and how the Carribean Way color had a little of the Rose and a little of the Green Subway Tile as well as some blues and greens. They all complimented each other very well.

Overall, I loved working with the yarn from Mandi’s Makings and will definitely be trying some more of her yarn in the future (might be sooner than you think)!
