This hat pattern – designed by Stephen West – was a part of the Painting Honeycombs collection and free gift for Hiberknitalong in 2020!
I didn’t end up getting to participate in the hiberknitalong, but I did knit this hat and it was everything I had hoped it would be!

Materials:
- Honey Striped Hat Pattern by Stephen West

- 80 yards of DK weight yarn for the contrasting color or 40 yards of two contrasting colors if you stripe them – I used yarn from Fuzzy What Knots
- US Size 4 / 3.5 mm and US 5 / 3.75 mm knitting needles – I use my ChiaoGoo Red Lace Interchangeable Set
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
Pattern:
Overall, this pattern is very fun to knit and quite simple! It looks complicated, but if you can do the knit stitch and slip stitches, you can do it!
I personally LOVE knitting patterns that involve slipping stitches to make designs! It becomes a very meditative process for me and I can easily get lost into the knitting!
The fit of the hat is perfect, it’s snug enough to stay in place on your head, while still leaving enough space to wear the hat over your headphones or sunglasses.
The only downside of this pattern is knitting the brim which is folded over and about 6 inches of a ribbing pattern! It just felt like the brim dragged on and on and I was ready to get to the fun part. However, because it’s a folded over brim – it’s very warm!
I decided not to add a pom pom to this hat – even though I used to add them to every hat! I just felt it really didn’t need it and I didn’t want anything to take away from the yarn and colors playing together.
The Yarn:
For my main color, I used the Swish DK base from Breaking Yarn in the Jane Margolis colorway. For my contrasting color, I chose to use the Fuzzy DK base from Fuzzy What Knots called A Safe Space. I decided not to do the striping, but instead just have a nice contrast!
I felt these two colors together were the perfect match for each other and this specific pattern!
Both of the yarn bases are very soft, but also maintain their structure – making these perfect for a hat!
Best of luck!
Thank you!
