Knitty Magazine put together the #ClapotisFest to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the knitting pattern – Clapotis (Clap-O-Tee)! I knit my very first Clapotis in my Breaking Violet colorway and was featured in the Deep Fall 2024 issue of the Knitty Magazine!

Pattern Details:
The Claptois a free pattern from Knitty Magazine – HERE! It was designed by Kate Gilbert and it’s a scarf that is knit on the bias. There are several sections and it’s extremely easy to memorize the pattern and let me tell you – dropping down those stitches is definitely the best part of this pattern! So satisfying!
You can easily modify the pattern to be knit in the yarn weight and needle size that you want! The pattern itself calls for Worsted Weight yarn, but I used Fingering Weight and will share my alterations below for how to achieve a similar look and length as the original pattern!
I used a size US size 3 / 3.25 MM needle from my ChiaGoo interchangable red lace set with a 16 inch cable! This set is my absolute favorite and 100% worth the investment and you can use it over and over again and it makes it to easy!
Two things to note – the reverse side is the right side! This threw me off for a second while I was knitting mine – because it’s opposite of what you think and sometimes you can get confused which side you’re on! The second thing is, they do not recommend that you block the scarf! It creates a naturally curly and ripple texture! SOO Fun!
Yarn Details:
I used two fingering weight skeins of my Breaking Violet colorway from my shop – BreakingYarn.com!
Since I used a fingering weight yarn instead of a worsted weight like the pattern calls for, I did a total of 30 repeats in section 3 – straight rows. This provided me with enough length to be able to wrap it around and it wasn’t too short. I did the normal amount of repeats for the section 2 – increase rows. Although, if you wanted it to be a little wider, I don’t think it would be bad to add one or two more increases. Just keep in mind that this would change the length a little bit because you’ll be using more yarn throughout.
The pattern also calls for some stitch markers! There are several people’s notes on Ravelry about what alteration you can do while knitting so you do not need the markers, but to be honest, I didn’t understand them! Instead, I just used larger jump rings as stitch markers so they would be uniform while knitting them and they worked perfectly!
The variety pack of jump rings also gives you options for smaller or larger stitch markers (or you could actually use them to make things)!
#ClapotisFest Details:
These contest rules are straight from the Deep Fall 2024 issue of Knitty Mag and I encourage you to also check out the magazine and all of the rules to enter to win!
Readers of Knitty could win their choice of a Clapotis worth of indie-dyed yarn, generously and kindly provided by each independent yarn dyer! Here’s how to enter the contest:
- To be eligible to win, knit a Clapotis in the yarn of your choice and submit ONE (1) stellar photo to this page. We encourage you to use indie-dyed yarn, but will accept any yarn of any description for your contest entry.
- You may enter as many Clapotises as you are able to knit by the deadline. Only one (1) entry per Clapotis will be accepted. (ie you may not send in multiple entries of the same Clapotis.)
- Your photo and entry form must be received by December 1, 2024 at midnight, EST. Entries received after this date will not be eligible to win.
- Entries may come from anywhere on the planet. Even Québec.
- All entries received by the deadline will be assembled into a flipbook like the Clapotisfest book shown above, which will share the knitter’s first name, general location (ie State/Province and Country), yarn and quantity used. This flipbook will go live in the Winter ’24 Knitty Surprise, along with the Surprise patterns, in mid-January 2025.
- 50 photo entries that receive the most votes are considered winners. The respective knitters of each winning Clapotis will receive their choice from the prize pool, with the Clapotis that received the most votes having first choice. We will then work our way down the winners list until all the prizes have been claimed. We feel the knitting of the Clapotis is the equivalent of a skill-testing question, so no math will be required.
- We will post the list of winners and which yarn they chose in our Spring+Summer 2025 issue, which goes live in March 2025.
- You may share your Clapotis contest entry(ies) in progress or complete on social media as much as you like! We’d appreciate it if you’d use the #clapotisfest hashtag, and link to this page if you can. Thank you for helping get the word out!
- To stay on top of contest deadlines, and see when the entries and winners are posted, join our little respectful mailing list here.
