Crochet Knight Hat with Visor

I don’t usually like to do commissions for people, but when a friend reached out about getting matching crochet hats for him and his son, I couldn’t resist – especially after I found a pattern for the photo he sent!

The Pattern:

The pattern overall was pretty easy to follow. I would say this is an intermediate crochet pattern – so maybe not the best first project for a new crocheter. I’m not new to crochet and this was still a challenge for me!

The nice thing about this pattern is that it comes with multiple sizes (xs-s, m-l, and xl-xxl) so it can basically fit anyone’s head – including a small child.

There are also a ton of pictures to accompany the written pattern and that came in very handy so I could double check that I understood the directions.

The hat – it was very easy to crochet and the directions were extremely easy to follow.

The crest – the most challenging part for me was the crest. I don’t know if it was a mixture of my tension and the instructions, but I struggled with the crest. It took me way too many hours to complete the crest (like 4 hours…waaaa).

The visor – the visor was relatively easy, however, it was difficult to follow the decrease pattern a little bit when doing the border. But again, maybe it was just me?

Overall, the pattern is well written and the design is clever. I would recommend it to someone who wants to make this hat!

The Yarn:

I purchased some Loops and Thread Impeccable yarn from Michaels Craft Store. It is 285 yards per skein. I purchased 2 pale gray and 1 black. I used the majority of the gray yarn for the two hats and a small amount of the black for the two hats.

The yarn is a very sturdy yarn, which came in handy for some of the pieces – like the crest.

I did like that the yarn was 4 ply! It was easy to pull apart so I could use it as thread to sew the crest and the buttons on for a seamless look.

Overall, this was a fun project! It did take me about 12 hours for the XXL size, but it was fun to see it all come together at the end! And, my friend was very happy with the outcome!

What do you think? Is this a project you could see yourself taking on?
